In the case of agreed student mobility Union University and the partner institution shall agree in advance on the recognition of periods of studying abroad according to the Rule Book on International Mobility. A successful credit transfer requires the recognition of credits. Naturally, the credits and learning outcomes of a single educational component in different programs cannot be identical. Fair recognition, rather than perfect or absolute equivalence, should be sought. The University therefore takes a flexible approach to the recognition of credits obtained in another context.

The credit recognition should be based on the learning outcomes achieved as part of the educational component at the host institution. As stipulated in the ECTS User’s Guide, recognition means that the number of credits gained for suitable learning outcomes achieved, at the appropriate level, in another context will replace the number of credits that are allocated for these learning outcomes at the awarding institution.

A full recognition of courses and activities passed and realized during mobility has the same outcome for the student as if he/she has taken those courses at UUB. Course name, ECTS credits and number of classes are all recognized in alignment with the equivalents of UUB on the grounds that the student has successfully passed that course in a receiving institution. If the content of courses or activities passed or realized during mobility is in significant disagreement with the courses at UUB, or if such courses do not exist at UUB whatsoever, the ECTS credits acquired during mobility are not calculated into the total number of ECTS credits necessary for the successful completion of a study programme and for graduation. However, all courses which cannot be recognized are registered and listed in the Diploma Supplement. If the grading systems of UUB and the receiving institution are not the same, the grade obtained by a student at a receiving institution during mobility, which can be recognized, is converted into the grade which is equivalent to the grade at UUB (“aligned grade“). The process of aligning grades is realized in accordance with the European Commission ECTS User’s Guide. The national system of grading is used as a foundation for aligning grades and comparing them in compliance with the ECTS Grading Scale. If a student submits all documentation for the process of recognition, the Academic ECTS Coordinator adopts a Decision on Academic Recognition of Mobility, no later than 7 days prior to his/her continuation of studies at UUB.

Before the commencement of the mobility, the Mobility Coordinator at the University or Faculty shall:

• Study the intended learning outcomes, level, curriculum and the assessment methods of the courses that the student will take as part of the student mobility.
• Compare the intended learning outcomes of the courses at the host institution with the intended learning outcomes of the equivalent courses (the student’s programme of study at Union University).
• Evaluate whether the intended learning outcomes of the courses at the host institution meet the learning outcomes of the equivalent courses of the student’s programme at Union University.
• The Mobility Coordinator shall submit a recommendation for approval of credit transfer to the Dean of the school.
